History
The mission of the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County is to end domestic violence and abuse. We are the only agency in Washington County that has an ongoing emergency safe home for victims of domestic violence, and offers comprehensive prevention, education and direct services. We embrace the following critical strategies to address the tragedy of family violence: safety for women and their children, support and advocacy for individuals and families, and education for the community.
The Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County was initially organized in 1978 as the Women's Resource Center of Wood River to address the problems of domestic violence. The center provided crisis intervention services with a 24 hour helpline and a safe home program for women and their children. Since that time, the agency has expanded its services in order to meet the needs of victims of domestic abuse throughout Washington County. In addition to the safe home, the WRC operates a Drop-In Center at 61 Main Street in Wakefield, a court office in the McGrath Judicial Complex on Route 1 in Wakefield, and Support Groups in North Kingstown, Wakefield, and Westerly.
The DVRC has an annual operating budget of $631, 698. Funds are raised through a variety of sources including state, federal and municipal funds; private grants and foundations; donations from individuals and community groups; and a calendar of Special Events. In 1985-6 the Center ran a successful capital campaign to purchase and renovate the house it had been renting and using as a shelter. In 1989 - 91, the DVRC ran a capital campaign to purchase the Drop-In Center at 61 Main Street. The DVRC maintains a building fund to handle repairs and maintenance of these facilities.
In the agency's Strategic Plan, the Board of Directors has outlined three Organizational Goals which frame the agency's future direction. These goals are as follows:
